Exhibition "The Collector"
The Unicamp Art Gallery organized and opened the exhibition “The Collector” on July 3, 2012.
The main objective of the exhibition is to present a character who plays an important role in the art circuit, presenting part of the collection of Pedro Hiller, a businessman and collector from São Paulo who declares himself an obsessive observer. Our attempt is to present and try to understand this universe: what leads someone to think about, acquire, preserve and promote the work of contemporary artists? How does this production coexist in the same space as ancient art objects – most of them oriental (Chinese), historical engravings and drawings, old books and a whole series of items that vary, according to Hiller himself, between the sublime and the grotesque? Personal taste and aesthetic value are the axes that construct this possibility and Hiller's love for each of his objects or works is the striking feature of everything that accumulates in his deposits.
For the exhibition at the Unicamp Art Gallery, Hiller himself suggested and selected around one hundred works, including engravings and drawings, by artists Marcello Grassmann, George Gutlich, Ana Elisa Dias Baptista, Paulo Sayeg and Vera Goulart, as well as some references to the Chinese collection. The exhibition, which will remain on display until the end of July, also led to a series of conversations and activities proposed by professors, students and staff of the Institute of Arts, the Engraving Research Center and the Gallery, which will be presented during the exhibition period. Round tables with guest artists, engraving workshops, guided tours for students from public schools, demonstrations of engraving techniques and a debate on collecting are some of the activities proposed.
