(UN)SUSTAINABLE CARTOGRAPHIES
Rafa Cavalheri
"Cartographies (in)Sustainable" is an exhibition that invites us to explore the dialogues on sustainability, textile waste and contemporary art. In this context, CARTOGRAPHY emerges as the central theme of the exhibition that guides the artistic journey. In the first axis, the artist uses drawings sewn onto fabrics to provoke reflections on the impacts of human intervention on nature.
In addition to this territorial approach, Rafa Cavalheri explores, in the second axis, the cartographies of memory. Through "word-objects" sewn from textile waste, he proposes words that foster sustainable thinking. Thus, each word displayed in the work acts as an individual repository, inviting the public to create their own images based on the grammar of the exhibition. These associations and relationships between words and memory create a space for reflection for the public, not only expanding and enriching discussions on the themes addressed, but also inviting them to be part of the exhibition through interpretation .
In short, "Cartographies (in)Sustainable" is not just an exhibition, but an invitation to a journey of education and awareness, where cartographies, both territorial and memory-based, serve as starting points for a deeper exploration of the world we inhabit and the narratives we construct about it.

The drawings presented in this set are a reflection of natural landscapes in constant transformation, the result of human interference. The cartography discussed here reflects on urban, industrial and technological development, driven by the desire for profit of the capitalist paradigm, which often does not take into account the surrounding ecosystems, treating nature merely as a material resource.
However, these landscape transformations not only contribute to worsening climate change, but also increase social disparities, particularly affecting the most vulnerable communities globally. Unbridled human development leaves a trail of environmental destruction and social inequality in its wake, highlighting the flaws of the current economic system.
It is crucial that we raise awareness and rethink our approaches to collaborating with nature. We must reflect on our individual choices and set them aside to build an environmentally responsible and fairer society.

In the second axis of the exhibition, the artist explores the cartographies of memory through the creation of "word-objects". Using textile waste, the works are embroidered with the typography developed by the artist himself. The proposal of this axis is educational, seeking to stimulate reflection on sustainable practices. Each word displayed in the work serves as an invitation to explore the repository of individual memories and sensations, inviting the public to create their own images based on the unique grammar of the exhibition.
Fashion emerges as a subtle and inevitable aspect in the artist's works. The entire creative process is artisanal and based on the principles of fashion: from the modeling of the letters to the types of seams, finishing and finishing, which are the same as those used in the production of clothing. It is important to emphasize that the choice of textile material in the creative process goes beyond aesthetics; it is a conscious choice.
The artist intends, through the recycling of these materials, to raise awareness about fashion data and the impacts that its industry generates on the environment. From the islands of waste and discards to the impacts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, waste in rivers and the impact on the earth. The "word-objects", therefore, when accessed, seek to link these resources, their impacts and materials, promoting a sensitive awareness so that we can inhabit the world in harmony and responsibility with nature. This approach aims not only to stimulate reflection, but also to encourage the adoption of more sustainable practices in the context of fashion and beyond.
